Guide introduction

The Neo-Retro Unreal Guide explains the rendering choices behind low-resolution, limited-palette, and display-driven visuals in Unreal Engine. The same principles and tradeoffs apply whether or not a project uses Ferrite.

Begin with a visible target or failure, then work through three questions:

  1. What is Unreal’s renderer doing?
  2. Which artistic or performance tradeoff fits the project?
  3. How will you verify the result in motion and on the target hardware?

Links to current Epic documentation accompany engine behavior that may vary by renderer, platform, or engine version. When Ferrite can automate part of a workflow, the Guide names that step without making the Unreal guidance depend on the plugin.

For Ferrite controls and procedures, use the Ferrite Manual.

Reproduce the condition, observe the image, and change one meaningful lever at a time. A still frame can hide crawling, ghosting, unstable sampling, or an unexpected cost, so verify the chosen tradeoff in motion as well.
